An enforcement strategy is being put into place for the Cowichan Valley Regional District's parks and trails system.

An annual spring meeting at the CVRD offices brought together members of the RCMP, Forests Land and Natural Resource officers, B.C. Parks rangers, conservation officers and CVRD bylaw enforcement officers.

According to the CVRD's manager of the inspections and enforcement division Brian Duncan, their task was to allocate sufficient staff to areas where non-compliance to posted regulations remains an issue.

"Chemainus River Park normally warrants considerable time due to its remoteness and lack of cell phone coverage,'' noted Duncan. "However, with the co-operation of all the agencies involved, regular patrols will take place every weekend, including long weekends.''

The same applies for the many kilometres of trails throughout the area, including the numerous parks from the Malahat to Nanaimo Airport and Saanich Inlet to the West Coast.

CVRD and RCMP bike patrols will again be monitoring the trail system, as in the past.

Duncan urged anyone witnessing a violation of regulations to call the CVRD hotline at (250)-746-2600. People should leave their name and phone number and as much detail as possible.

The hotline is monitored daily, including weekends. Duncan stressed personal information will remain confidential.

But he added it is not an emergency line. Emergencies should be reported by calling 911, as usual.

"With the continued support of the concerned residents of the Cowichan Valley, we will do our best to ensure our parks and trails remain safe for all to enjoy,'' Duncan concluded.
