Environmental Appeal Board Legal Action Update

Our legal team at Farris LLP and SRA legal committee board members have been working tirelessly on the quickly approaching EAB hearings which will be held in Victoria in March.

Despite legal challenges by South Island Aggregates (SIA) aka Cobble Hill Holdings (CHH) on Christmas Eve to vary the EAB Stay decision and allow 40,000 tons of contaminated soil be dumped on the property the SRA and CVRD continue to oppose any such motion.  January has also been filled with motions by SIA attempting to limit further scientific investigation on their site.

The SRA believes that any risk to our drinking water shed is unacceptable.  We will continue to vigorously oppose SIA's permit application and look forward to a favourable outcome for our community.

We continue to seek your support by contributing to our Legal Action Fund. Please visit our to see how you can get involved, attend our fundraising events and up to date information.

SRA Fundraising

Thank to the generous support of community members, businesses and others who care about the future of Shawnigan Lake, we have raised almost 60% of the estimated $200,000 needed for our Legal Action Fund.  We continue to seek your support!  No donation is too small.
In order to protect the Shawnigan Lake watershed from contamination from the SIA contaminated soil dump, we have committed to ongoing fundraising actives.
Please consider attending our upcoming 'We <3 Shawnigan Lake' fundraiser this month.

Increasing Taxes in South Cowichan

Another focus of the SRA is to engage the CVRD regarding our steadily increasing taxes here in South Cowichan. Over the past ten years our taxes have increased approximately 234% with little to no service increases.  The SRA now has a special committee working hard to provide input into the CVRD budget process and make our voices heard when it comes to reducing the tax burden on our community.
