For Immediate Release, November 28, 2015
Shawnigan Lake, BC
The ability to lawfully gather is a fundamental value of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the SRA applauds the peaceful demonstrations occurring in community regarding opposition to the SIA Toxic Soil Dump Permit. Caught on video Friday, November 27th, in what can only be described as an unlawful act, a member of the public exercising their rights to peacefully demonstrate on Stebbings Road, was violently assaulted by a truck driver attempting to enter the SIA property.
The SRA condemns these actions and looks forward to the outcome of an RCMP investigation into the matter and encourages charges be laid by the Crown. "Violence in any form, by any parties, is contrary to the values of our community and our organization" states Calvin Cook SRA President, he went on to comment that, "The ability to demonstrate peacefully, within the parameters of the law and the courts is a fundamental right that must be protected and encouraged - the actions today by a client of SIA is deplorable".
Currently the SRA and CVRD are before the courts challenging decisions by the Christy Clark Government to allow a contaminated soil dump permit by South Island Aggregates in the basin of Shawnigan Lake. Shawnigan Lake water is a drinking water source used by over 12,000 people in the area.
As always, the SRA action is very expensive and we are asking everyone in Shawnigan and the CVRD to contribute again to the legal fund.
