A no water use advisory was lifted last evening which had been in effect for the south-end of Shawnigan Lake.
The order, issued by Island Health on Friday, November 13, after run off from the SIRM toxic soil dump was exposed to the Shawnigan Basin during the recent rain storms.
The SRA applauds the precautionary action of Island Health to protect hundreds of residents who draw their water from the south end. This continues to underscore the potential for significant health implications when a breech does occur.
The SRA, as predicted, suspects this type of advisory will be a regular occurrence despite SIRM's claims that a contaminated soil dump collecting heavy metals and toxic contaminants is safe. Yet another reminder that flawed science, bad policy and big dollars continues to trump common sense.
The SRA is calling for the resignation of the Minister of Environment, Mary Polack, who continues to place the demands of business ahead of the health and wellbeing of BC residents. The Minister continues to neglect her duties showing a complete lack of water security and callous disregard for protection of the environment.
