Shawnigan Lake, BC – The BC Ministry of the Environment under the leadership of the Hon. Minister Terry Lake who supports and is set to approve a permit for South Island Aggregates (SIA) to dump 100,000 tons of contaminated soil within the Shawnigan Lake Watershed each year for the next 50-years.
The documentary filmmaker Paul Manly’s recent visit to the community has captured the story of our watershed under threat. After exploring the story in the air, on the water and ground Manly has produced a short video to describe the situation highlighting the anticipated damage to Shawnigan Lake drinking water.
“This proposal defies logic and must be stopped...” comments Paul Manly, Manly Media. “Safe healthy drinking water is more important than profits for big business”. Thousands of residents rely on Shawnigan Lake for their drinking water not including the multiple wells that surround the SIA’s dumpsite. Independent scientific reports and warnings from the health authority and within government itself, has indicated a high risk for drinking water contamination.
The SRA is pleased to support Mr. Manly in his efforts to raise awareness and help to stop the SIA permit.
The BC Environment Ministry is to end the public comment period April 9th. We encourage you to make your voice heard and contact Minister Lake in opposition of this permit by emailing him at and his Deputy Minister .
